Hallo from Bulgaria.I want ask how i can make the engine of '21' and '24' more powerfull.
May i put some kind of turbo or may i chage entire engine,want kind of engine can i put
in the vehicle -may be v6 or v8.I want make a real monster on the road ,but in same time to be Volga,
because this is the CAR.
If yo've got some information you can write on russian,i understand russian but i can't write for now.

In short. To my mind, actually, there are 2 ways:

a) fuel injection or 4-bbl. carb, dual exhaust, encreasing compression ratio, super- or turbochargers... - engine tunning/improvement. After all this, the original 21A or 24D engine will produce about 130-150 hp (with chargers - may be up to 180...200 hp), so about modern ZMZ injection engines like ZMZ-406. Parts from this engines can be used. Well, but this will probably make the engine's lifetime very short...

b ) (the best and the most effective, but also the most difficuilt) - installation of a V8 (like GAZ M-23 KGB Interceptor). In the Ukraine, a fellow ("23" by nick on this board) is now builting a GAZ-21 conversion with 245 hp engine from Mercedes W117 (5000 cc.). Before that, he installed Russian ZMZ-53 4,8 l. V8 (about 150 hp after tunning). After the installation of a heavier and MUCH more powerfull engine you will have to install new brakes (original are not very effective), new gearbox, new rear axle and so on. So, it will be only a Volga body and interior. Almost all other parts will be unoriginal. One can install a V6, but this will be as difficuilt as to install a V8, but much less effective. V12 engines also will do, I suppose. There is an Estonian M-21 conversion with BMW (AFAIR, m.b. Mercedes) V12 engine.

But, I must say, conversions like this are not pleased on this board very much. This board is generally dedicated to discussing stock original GAZ M-21. You can read about this subject in "Хотрод" section, and information about GAZ-23 /'62-70 car with large V8 that was built on base of GAZ-21 for KGB/ you can find in "История" section.

IMHO, V8 too heavy for Volga, 23 had a ballast in a luggage rack for distributing of weight on axes. I not think, that it is good for you...

Ok, but Uncle23 didn't use this feature ))) and everithing was great. Actually, KGB interceptors were equipped with the ballast lead plate during everyday patrolling only, to make driveing easiar. And, you can find a lighter V8 engine then ZMZ-53. American musclecars didn't need any ballast ! Chevy Nova SS V8 for example... it was smaller then the Volga...
